I think some Belgians got pretty wacky with it. Some guy from Belgium threw down $200 a piece for two Gorilla Biscuits and Judge records I had.

I didn't really drink until I was 20, but I don't think I was ever full on nailed to the x. Maybe if the bands were better. I guess Gorilla Biscuits were good, but not $200 good.

The biggest nailed to the x guy I knew recently died. He failed to properly ventilate the exhast from the generator that powered his grow op. He was tremendously flawed, but he was a fantastic personality and I miss him.

I've always been the DD. I think I've been too drunk to do anything useful less than 10 times. Smoked weed about a dozen times but never smoked anything else. I think that coffee is just my drug, really. I do enjoy drinking (and drank a moderate amount a few years ago) but the hangovers are too cruel. Forget wine. The sulfites give me an instant headache. I would actually really love to do some recreational drugs just to see what they're about but I think it's a bad idea. I'm too much of a control freak. One time the dentist gave me too much silly gas and it just made me confront the void. Felt like I was drowning for 10 seconds. Fuck that.

The other side of it is that my dad is 58. His friends are a bunch of substance veterans that have graduated to cancer, death or just poor health. Hearing those Minor Threat lyrics and reading about how drugs got the best of people like Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix just sealed it for me. (And it's just totally false that these people would play better fucked up.) I just never wanted to put my body through that. That said, things like sleep deprivation and 2 espressos a day probably don't help either. In fact, I had a serious starbucks problem last summer. Crazy deadlines, little sleep. One day my heart was just racing and I decided to deal with the headaches and switch to tea.

By the time bands like Earth Crisis and I guess the 3rd revival of the straight edge thing came around, I was puzzled why anyone would still be yelling about not doing drugs. Write about something else. I went to a bunch of these kinds of shows just to see people do all those crazy moves. These people really seemed like the kind of jocks that ought to be drinking. And now I guess they are.

I always liked how the Descendents would have songs about coffee. I used to have one of those bonus cups that they made.

I also seem to really enjoy some of what people would consider to be 'drug music'.

i know a whole group of them back home who are still all about the edge 10 years strong. i think it's cool that they still abstain from drugs and alcohol (i don't think i knew anyone who abstained from sex or whatever..). what's lame is they still get XveganX tatoos, listen to Earth Crisis, and wear cargo pants.

nostalgia for a movement that was really dorky to begin with (despite the good ideas within it)= crap.
