when I was 19 or 20, a bunch of straight edge kids from bands shared a big house with practice space. Two guys from my band moved in and they were very not straight edge. In 2 months, all of the X kids but one were drinking, doing drugs, stealing and not paying rent.
They were later evicted, but those are still some of my fondest memories.

I don't drink alcohol, do drugs or smoke cigarettes. I stuck to these habits before I knew about Minor Threat of Fugazi. It just seemed right to me. None of my parents is or was alcoholic, they hardly drink alcohol at all. They'll sip some red wine like once in a year or so. They never told me or my brothers to stay away from drugs or alcohol or cigarettes.
I never force people not to smoke or drink or do drugs, I have no problems with other doing that. I do ask people not to smoke around me because I don't like the smell. Dope smell is giving major headache so I prefer not to be around people who smoke it, but sometimes you can't avoid that.

Some people choose to go after or join a cult because they need a place to run away from their problems, because they can't handle them by themselves. Some people turn to religion/cults, some people turn to violence and some people turn to drugs, some people join the army in order to run away from their problems.
The reason why "many" people who were sxe turned into drugs later on is because sxe isn't like other religions or cults. There's no god you can pray to, there are no "rewards" when they stick to their faith. They don't go like "yay! I didn't drink today, god's gonna love me".
Those straight edgers who became junkie or alcoholics afterwards, would have become that anyhow, being straight edgers postponed that for a while.
People who push their faiths/opinions upon others are most of the times people who aren't sure in their faith. They try to make others believe in their ideology so they can feel like they're in a "good company".

I don't call myself straight edge, there were a few times when I said i'm straight edge, I once even drew black X's on my hands, but that was just out of boredom.
So many broke up because of drugs or didn't break up but some of the members were fucked up because of drugs. Fugazi is one of my favorite bands and I remember this time when I found out they don't do drugs, etc' and thought "finally! a band I like who don't do drugs!", I didn't know that before hand.

As far as I know, my Catholic-straightedge ex is still picking and choosing which portions of those two genres he wishes to follow. He plays in a somewhat well-known D.C. area band and has grown a beard. Sorta looks like a hermit now. I imagine that he still has major issues with sex and women and is still exclusively dating bisexual women with severe emotional issues and substance abuse problems.
