Film Series: Police Academy

Police Academy movies are basically a series of 1-2 minute "comedy" vignettes designed to display/reinforce the one thing they want you to know about the characters -- Winslow makes noises, Hightower is really big and strong, Mahoney is a beloved ladies man, Lassard is a well-meaning idiot, Tackleberry likes his guns, that short black woman is really soft-spoken but can turn it up when she needs to, Callahan is tough and has big tits, there's probably some sort of other ethnic stereotype character, and so on. They're all a little quirky and anti-establishment, and have to be established as such as explicitly as possible.

Every eighth scene or so, something happens to move the plot along. Then they move onto the next series of vignettes.

Eventually this all adds up to a climax that is itself a series of vignettes, showing how all these characters use that trait to help save the day. And then they get some sort of award or honor in the end.

You could probably write the full script for a movie like this in one afternoon.

I'll watch a Police Academy movie when nothing else is on. They're just so deliberate and stupid, and for some reason, I find that a little endearing. Plus, it's great for when you're doing something else -- it's not like you feel lost when you look over at it after 5 minutes, since you know exactly who everyone is and have a good sense for what comes next.
