...By no means better than the original, but currently one of my favorite covers to listen to:
Everyday People - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
(original, of course by Sly & the Fam')

52Walt Mink's cover of Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" is lovingly performed with care.
The Melvins covered PF's "Interstellar Overdrive" - that was intense.
Monster Magnet's cover of Grand Funk's "Sin's a Good Man's Brother."

53I'm surprised no one has listed this already (though I'm sure there are plenty of Neil Young fans...) - Cortez the Killer - Slint - way more dynamic than the original.

Virus 100
Subtitle : 16 Artists stone and assasinate Dead Kennedys songs.
This is well worth getting hold of, nearly all great versions.
The L7 version of 'Let's Lynch The Landlord' is total crap though.
The Hiphoprisy cover of 'California Uber Alles' is brilliant.

I disagree but I'm still going to drunkenly shout at them to play it when I see them this Saturday.

59I'll go out on a limb and say Chicago's own Smashing Pumpkins did a kick-ass version of the Cars' "You're All I've Got Tonight"...I like the foot stomping and double tracked drums. They did a pretty cool cover of "Dancing In The Moonlight" by Thin Lizzy, too.
I don't think it gets any better than Stevie Wonder, but the Chili Peppers' version of that tune of his was pretty rockin...
And whoever said Buckley before, absolutely.
cheers

60House of the Rising Sun- this is one I'm not certain who originally wrote it, and where I've heard it before, but I assosciate it with Bob Dylan because of this version. I give it tie status on grounds that I can't pinpoint original.
It's an old folk song, no one knows who wrote it. I think it was The Animals that made it famous though.
But speaking of Leadbelly, I'd say Nick Cave's version of Black Betty is on a par with the original.
