mister ralph, what do you know of the texas tornadoes and/or solo doug? i worship about half of the _doug sahm and friends records_, and have a few career-spanning anthologies, but i feel as though there must be more to know.

I think you've got me beat on this one. Besides the classic era of Sir Doug records, I only know Doug Sahm and Band and Groovers Paradise. Somehow, I've never heard the Texas Tornadoes--and I love both Doug Sahm and Freddy Fender.

Any advice?

The first Texas Tornados album (it's just called Texas Tornados} is the best, but they never made a record as good as you'd hope given the people involved, though they're all several miles away from bad. They were a hoot and a half live, too ... saw 'em once and Augie Meyers was so baked that he couldn't remember what state they were in, even after serious prodding from Doug and Freddy. They played some old Sir Doug stuff that rocked on out, too.

I was actually looking for this thread to see if anyone had any recommendations for Doug Sahm related stuff as that album is the only one I own.

So I'll check out what has been listed in this thread and reiterate BER's question.

I'm a big fan of 'The Song of Everything' with it's free jazz intro. And 'Whole Lotta Peace of Mind'(?) with it's really strung-out violin (I think that's the track name). That's some pretty cosmic music.
