Duh! Velvet Underground. Wow. Clearly asleep at the wheel there. Yes of course. The Cobra Lounge should be throwing a fantastic "Chinese Democracy" release party as well. In 2012 or so.

The other nice factor about the place is that in addition to having an awkward parking lot (which is a sure way to get your car or bike fucked up by a drunk bar patron trying to figure out how to get out of it) there is plenty of street parking in the area as that section of town is totally dead at night.

All I know about it is Naked Raygun played a couple "secret" shows there.

"Butt rock" basically means hair metal and cheezy rock. Think Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, Guns 'n' Roses, Faster Pussycat, etc.. European examples would be The Scorpions, Turbonegro, Backyard Babies, etc.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the name derives from the fact that many of the genre's performers usually wore extremely tight pants.

OK, let me opine about the Cobra Lounge now that we have played so that anyone who searches for info in the future can find this thread.

I found the comments about the atmosphere in this thread to be accurate. The red lighting, "Velvet Revolver Afterparty" theme is definitely a little whatever, but whatever. Decor is generally not our big concern for venues.

They treated us like kings. The people who own the venue and were working that evening simply could not have been nicer to us. They fed us gratis, they paid us well off the bar, they were back-breakingly polite, they gave us 20 (!!!) free drink tickets and another handful of free drinks beyond that, they gave us all kinds of swag, and they generally were just incredibly cool to us. That needs to be emphasized. For whatever other flaws people may choose to point out, having a staff that aren't dicks is a huge plus.

The stage is spacious and we found the sound to be above average. Some people have commented that it sounds like ass. Perhaps the sound is inconsistent from night to night. But for our show, everyone was happy with the on-stage and off-stage sound.

So Cobra Lounge = A+ in my single experience. It may not be your favorite place to hang out, but as a band we could not have asked for more.
