For the kick(26"), I've just installed an Evans EQ3 (coated) on the batter side and a Remo coated single-ply on the front. There's no muting/dampening of any kind and I'm hearing this weird pingy, basketball bounce sort of ring when I kick it. Maybe it's a standing wave, flutter echo or something along those lines (?). Do you think it's the heads or just the kick itself being weird ? Also, I'd be curious to hear any kick-tuning advice anyone here might want to offer. I'm going for the Bonham/Cozy Powell (Rainbow-era) sort of sound. Thanks.

Did you put a felt strip on the front head?

That single-ply head is going to want to vibrate at high freqs, since it's very thin. Make sure that you have damped it somehow, though not overmuch. Also make sure you haven't tightened it down so tight that it's not able to rumble.

I don't know much about the EQ4 head, but it sure looks like the Powerstroke P4 to me, which is what I sometimes use.

You want the batter head to be the pitch of the drum, with a felt strip to cut down on accumulation and sympathetic vibration from the monitors when you play live. You definitely don't want it too tight.

I doubt it's the drum itself.

Tuning a bass drum isn't easy, so don't be discouraged too soon. Keep at it.

Anyways, I'll try to get my hands on the felt strip and I'll try tuning as you've described. Admittedly, I've been worrying a bit that I've ended up with a great-looking but mediocre-sounding kit. But then, that's just me being a negative jerk :lol:

I need a real camera first of all. Also a computer and OS (damn you Windows Vista, damn you to Hell!!!) that will actually accept files from a cellphone. Yep, my cheap-ass Acer is well...cheap-ass.
