As a teen growing up in Thatcher's Britain in all its glorious shittiness that song spoke to me. there were a whole load of young people with little hope for the future - unemployment was rife - who felt completely sidelined by the "Greed is Good" culture of the disgusting Tory bastards.
The Smiths gave us poetry, beauty, and dignity expressed through the acid wit of Morrisey's words. I wasn't even a massive fan but to suggest they were crap and Morrisey "gay" is just bullshit of the highest order. he was a great big FUCK YOU to the establishment which is why all the Tory press hated him so much. he scratched the shiny, Naziesque suface of the neo-liberal facade and exposed the pain beneath.
NC factor 10.
