where should I move?

1
I'm considering moving. more so than anything, I'm not happy, I'm not playing music, and I feel like shit. I'm in a rut right now. I hate my job, and all the promise of moving up hasn't happened. I have a two year degree that has gotten me no where. the whole idea of going back to school, I've thought about it, but I don't know if I can afford to do it again.

I feel like I should maybe move on, instead of signing a lease and being miserable again for a year, bitching to people about my job, and getting drunk every night I'm not working. maybe, it really is time to venture into the unknown.

I've considered chicago, but, is there any where else that would be suited for playing music, good work, and nice place to live that I might like better?

I have this idea that portland would be pretty neat...
throw some things out there...

Don't move to Chicago. It is very expensive to live here, and I'm not talking about rent. You get taxed up the ass and it isn't really worth it. Portland is a nice place to live. I haven't been there in 8 years so it could have changed. but at least there is no sales tax in Oregon. Chicago has the highest sales tax in the nation at an eye gouging 12%

Chicago is the best. This morning there was a poop on the train, taking its own seat. Stinky brown poop, about the size of a fist. It was so weird about the poop getting on at Addison and sitting down in that seat, opening up a paper and grumbling about the economy. I got off at Jackson and he was still on the train, so I'm thinking maybe he was getting off at lasalle. It's all speculation though really. Who knows why poops ride the train.

anywhere decent in california (except maybe san diego) is as expensive as chicago.

I'm from San Diego. Its just as expensive as anywhere else in cali now except maybe San Fran. They turned North Park into a yuppie shangrala (r.i.p. scolari's) San Diego has a good music scene that is tiny and insular as fuck. If you go there don't expect people to want to make new friends unless you are a drummer, they got like literally 3 good drummers there.

Rent is more expensive in SD than it is Chicago but cigarettes and everything else isn't taxed as much. The good thing about San Diego is you can rent a house on the beach in TJ for 600 bucks if you feel like you can handle the commute (by train or car)

Hey sack,

http://www.findyourspot.com/

It's a doofy travel/real estate/something marketing site, but it has a cool quiz embedded in it that asks you what you want in a city and then matches you up with a top 25. It doesn't grab any personal information, just silly demographic shit like "i want to live in a major metropolitan city with art and mass transit."

don't move to AZ. It is a wasteland.

I don't think your problem is the place. I think your problem is your job. You said you hate your job. Get a better job.

That said, most of the cool places to live with mass transit and a good arts scene, are fuck-all expensive. Boston, SF, NYC, LA, Portland OR, DC. (there are surely others I am forgetting) are all gonna be fun, but tough to break into and you will spend 60% of your pay on rent.

The less expensive places I would consider if I wanted to be a guy in a band, and that was the most important thing, are: Chicago, Minneapolis, Providence, RI, Austin, TX. I would have put Madison, WI on that list, but you are apparently not happy there.

I really think that if you change some stuff about your life, you don't need to leave town. Get a better job. Start a better band. Get a hot girlfriend. Yeah, I know, easier said than done. But if you had a kickass job, a great band and a hot girlfriend, it wouldn't matter where you lived, right? Those kinds of circumstances would make even Atlanta or Houston appealing.
