Maestro Dario Argento or populist hack Brian DePalma?

In the DePalma C/NC, I mentioned reading that he and Argento have or had some sort of rivalry. Though they both sometimes mine the same territory, I think Argento is the better director by far.

What say you?

While both filmmakers made great, campy movies in the 70's and early 80's, DePalma was the one who knew he was making camp. And he did it very, very well. Argento is way too serious for his output.

Dressed To Kill, Phantom of the Paradise, Carrie, The Fury, and Blow Out. These films would kill Argento's even if Argento had the same hollywood budget as DePalma.

Speaking of Italians, Blowout's even better than Blow Up for the same reasons listed above.

I've gotten a bigger kick out of the Argento stuff. Also, Asia Argento...

That said - give me Brian De Palma, Wes Craven, John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Tobe Hooper, George Romero, any of these guys - over the MTV-horror-movie dabblers of today.

The Depalma vs. Argento debate again? I remember starting this in the Depalma thread.

Argento apparentl aydmires DePalma's work and has referenced a couple of his films, like Dressed to Kill, in his later stuff. I think both directors are past their prime now though.
