Grohl on Steely Dan-Nomeansno

I'm young enough that I've never heard Steely Dan on the radio, though I hear "Do It Again" is still played on classic rock radio...often.

I admit that I've listened to Steely Dan on and off for several years, however I largely listen only to their post-2000 releases (I'm asking for a beating here, I understand). To an extent, I'm a fan of Donald Fagen specifically. I enjoy his chord progressions, which explains why I like the newer Steely Dan albums (they seem to originate more from Fagen than Becker). I agree with the earlier comment about their raw/live performances - I've seen Fagen live and can attest to it.

The Fagen/Steely Dan liking is probably the most odd departure from my usual tastes in music along most any criteria, though it has faded a bit.

And,uh...oh yeah, Grohl...whatever, pssh.

I find it amusing that the Steely Dan fan needs a poll to back up his tastes. Also, since he makes girls cry, I don't know if I can trust him. Aside from listening to Dr Wu because the Minutemen cover was enjoyable, I haven't bothered listening to any of their stuff, and I've managed to avoid the radio. What's tolerable of their's?

NoMeansNo, on the other hand, I love, and I should be shot for not seeing them live yet, considering how often they play my town. Let's talk about NoMeansNo.

Ok, aside from all this Steely Dan stuff, Grohl said another thing which I found equally questionable:

"The power and intensity of NoMeansNo is just something that any band would want."

Any band?

I wonder if, say, Arab Strap or Low or Camper van Beethoved had ever desired to give the power and intensity of NoMeansNo a try...

Would scott or someone else recommend me a Steely Dan album to give a listen? I'm sure I've heard many a Steely Dan tune and wasn't aware of it, but other than that, I don't know that much about the band (other than Aja because of Wayne Shorter).

I have the gayest dance that goes along with "Peg" that embarrasses the children yet I perform it often and and in an unabashed manner. It's kind of a "waiter with arms full of food trying to get to the back table in a crowded restaurant" thing.

I consider Steely Dan to be like a son that wins the math olympics at his junior high. Fuck your quarterback son. Dan can integrate shit.

Perhaps this should have been in the "post while you're drunk" thread...
