Flatter most guys, and it's over. That is really all it takes, for 90% of the men I know.
What's impressive is that you saw the door was open and walked through it. That line has 'shit, I should've said...' written all over it.
I do think relating to women as they relate to each other is a good general practice for men. Probably it translates into reasonable luck in the picking-up area. Unless you get into best-friend territory, which means certain failure.
The collar douche's 'I have a shirt exactly like that' is a good, humorous example from a few pages back. And the failure of anything remotely stalker-like is a good counterexample.
