Tabor, relatively unusual destination in the Czech Republic. It just never seems to come up among the usual cities people visit there when they want to get out of Prague, such as Karlovy Vary or Kutna Hora.

Tabor was the site of an interesting religious group, the Taborites, a radical wing of the Hussite movement. They apparently did not believe in personal property and piled their possessions into a big heap of communal property. As such, they could be considered 15th century forrunners to the Communists. Supposedly, they were also into dancing around naked.

Which may be one reason why the other Hussite factions turned on them and eventually slaughtered most of them in 1434.

Pity, really.

Yeah, I've read a little about this since being here. The Communal property thing is quite remarkable.

It's a wonderful town - extremely unspoilt and pretty. Nice little bars, laid-back people.

there's another thread that'll short-cut you to some good advice. Doubtless most of it is true although, equally doubtless, everything has doubled in price since then.

Watch out for policemen hiding behind trees to catch you jay-walking
Never give your passport to the folks checking tram fare-dodgers (bastards in my experience)

I was drinking vodka with some guys from Czech Republic last week and they claim that the area around Brno is much nicer than Prague. they say that most people from Prague think they are the bees' knees, and look down on the rest of the country. So, I'd say, check out the girls on that area. :p

Having spent two years in Brno, I can say that it's certainly got its upsides (absence of tourist and expats, for instance), but I must say that a lot of the talk about how Brno and/or Southern Moravia is actually "nicer" than Prague is nothing but regional patriotism.

While I personally like Brno more than Prague, for the sake of fainess, I must say that the latter offers an inestimably greater number of things for visitors to do and see.

The area directly surrounding Brno is nothing to brag about, although there is an amazing network of Karst caverns about 20 miles to the north.
