I've built a few up. They are not so nice. I would opt for a similarly priced Pake or Soma, if available. I also sell quite a nice bike that was built for us by Waterford and in a private label batch - the same thing could be had under the name 'Milwaukee' bikes - which i believe retails for around $500 (ish) for the frame and fork. Waterford is an American builder based out of Waterloo Wisconsin and builds their own custom frames under their own name - small batch custom frames for shops - and Gunnar brand frames (both custom and non).

What would lead to their not being so nice - if it's important - is their weight (though fairly negligible to most) - their quality (the welds have gaps the size of small countries) and the quality of tubing (while Tange was important back in 1989 - not so sought after these days.) In fact I would go as far to tell you to choose just about anything other than an IRO - but that's just me.

Sorry to be so long winded, I'm a complete bike geek.

Yeah, I've been very happy with it so far.

Nitto Noodle bars, Brooks B17, MKS touring pedals, cloth tape (shellaced and twined). Riv-fanboy-with-no-style-on-a-budget, all the way.

I also highly recommend the Wald baskets. So cheap ($12.50 on Amazon), easily hackable. I have the #151 "drop-top" on this bike, and huge one (#139) on my "in-town" bike.

I have the Noodle bars on my Cross Check. They rule. As do the MKS touring lite pedals.

PM'd

Currently commuting via Redline Proline BMX. 6'4", 205 lbs. I think I have a 41/16 on it. Comp III on the front and Ritchey "Superfast" on the rear. Superfast is a relative term.

I must look totally fucking awesome.
