Supporting oneself w-o a " normal" " job"

I had a couple of paragraphs written about why a caregiver job working with an elderly or disabled client is perfect for your situation but the forums went down after I hit send and I'd already mindlessly closed the tab by the time I realized that my response had not gone through.

Anyway, yeah...caregiver. Try to not go through an agency if you can help it, as the agencies rip you off by often giving you 1/4 of the hourly fee that they charge the family/client.

Do you have a job this summer? Are you not attending classes at any point during the summer? Would you be interested in a temp job this summer, working at a summer camp that is geared toward college-bound overachieving children of the nauseatingly wealthy? Would you like to travel, expenses paid, to MIT or Stanford or UCLA or UC-Berkeley, etc. and get free room and board? If so, I have something that you should look into. It kind of sucks but it's also kind of fun.

If you're any good at it, proofreading/editing papers for students (undergrad, master's, etc.) can pay pretty well. Because you're in the middle of your own dissertation, this could be good or bad: Good because you'll get really good at recognizing crap/not crap and you'll get the basic gist of formatting. Bad because you could burn out on your own dissertation.

It's not steady work, but the lowball rate for beginning proofreaders is around $5/page at 250 words/page. Even for a 50-page thesis, you could pay a couple of non-rent bills.

You might stay away from your school, though; most universities have ethics policies about staff (even former staff) drumming up business in their halls.

Otherwise, the tutor or Kaplan approach seems like a good idea.

Good luck!
