So anyways, what were we talking about again, I forgot. Oh yeah, the Sox / Cubs thing. We haven't touched too much on the Southside vs. Northside thing that underlies this rivalry, at least for the Southsiders.
I think I pretty much like the Cubs out of deference to the old man. That's who he followed, that's who we always watched and it went on for so long, that that's just how it is.
I never even picked up on the North Side vs. South Side vibe until my twenties, which I guess is sort of typical for somebody considered a Northsider. Apparently there is not much love for Northsiders on the South Side, but it doesn't really go the other way because the entire South Side is pretty much off the radar to a textbook Northsider. I deal with this on a regular basis, as all my inlaws are Southsiders. In fact, my wife refused to believe that I didn't spend 50 percent of my life before I met her seething about Southsiders. I keep telling them that I'm from the Northwest Suburbs for chrissakes, but that counts, it seems. Plus ya know, geography's a pussy high-hat rich-kid Northsider concept or something.
Cubs or White Sox?
32I like both, but prefer the Sox. My Dad and my whole family are die-hard Cubs fans. I always preferred the AL and used to be a huge Orioles fan until I gave up on them in 2000 and decided to cheer for the home team.
While I like the Cubs -- and my family -- I can't stand most Cubs fans. I think this mostly stems from taking the L home and dealing with all the ignorant idiots going to Wrigley who have never taken public transportation. Night games are a hassle because they all crowd at the entrance to the L station and are oblivious to the rush hour crowd and the need to step all the way into the train. On one hand, I should be happy they are using public transportation. But they never shut up and the extra wait for a train usually puts me in a foul mood.
Besides, Mark Buerhle is my favorite player.

33Wrigley is a great old park to see a game but the crowd and the hood are CRAP.
The new Comiskey, while being very mall like and bland, has the better food and beer selection. Plus there really isn't a bad seat, even the nosebleeds.
The sports media in Chicago is biased for the Cubs and against the Sox and I think that's kind of too bad. But then sports news isn't really important anyway except to the hardcore fans so fuck it.
I don't get emotional about sports and the only reason I picked Sox is 1. they have won a world series in the last 100 years and 2. I married into a southside Sox family. So I am a bandwagoneer.
I've been anti sports my whole life and only recently took up golf and watching baseball from time to time. But really I don't give a shit.
However, I think it as valid for someone to get emotional about sports as it is for someone to get that way about their favorite band. I may not understand it for sports but I sure can for music.

38If I lived in Chicago and was thereby forced to choose a team, I would choose the Sox. I prefer National League baseball, though, so I would probably be at far more games at Wrigley, cheering for whoever plays against the Cubs.
My Midwestern NL allegiance is with the Brewers.

39Total horseshit. Wrigley is better than Comisky II in a lot of ways, but food is definately not one of them. Dude who made that up, is half retarded, or had a bad day when he visit Comisky.

40But that letdown was singular. After dozens of dishes at a dozen stadiums, I was impressed by how much baseball food had evolved. I went out on the road with the naïve optimism of a Cubs fan, and came back with the assured confidence of Yankees’ fans that success wasn’t just possible, but likely.
Now that I read this article, it makes sense.
