the voice is an instrument & there are many ways to play it.
playing it less than "straight" does not equal "schtick." if you think so, you may have to pull the "schtick" out of yer arsch.


i love how the songwriting & "improvisation" coexist.
makes me to feel the boredome when i listen to other bands doing "ok, four bars of this, then eight bars of that then..."

new album on the way? ah, this would be a very nice thing.

i dunno, she kind of sounds like that. not 'squeaky' or anything so much, but she definitely has the whole 'uber cute japanese girl' thing a lot of the time.

err, right. the original poster said he didn't like the way she sounded and asked if she sounds like that all the time. she kind of does, to an extent. the reason for that is because her singing reflects her personality and background. stands to reason, no? so when you say "maybe 'cause she's an übercute japanese girlwoman?" you're not actually disagreeing with any point i've made.

edit: i'm probably a bit snappy because i got into an argument with the netball referee tonight and then got home to find a vocal track that i'm supposed to mix in with a song a band recorded with me a month back, and the new track is filled with an ungodly amount of reverb and talking in between lines of singing (which i can't remove because of all the reverb).

it's doubly annoying because they're a really good band but they keep shooting themselves in the foot by doing this sort of stuff.

I'm really excited to see what they do with my friend Ed on guitar. 2/3 of Gorge Trio in Deerhoof? Yes, please.

Not hating at all. I enjoy some of their music. I'm simply recognizing the obvious schtick. Not even really saying it's that bad. It does get on a nerve tho.
