We're currently using a SAE mark 2600 solid state amp for my Matrix 805s. It's a 400 W amp and Steve is definitely right about the headroom issue. I have used them with a 125 W amp for a while and I really missed the details that I knew from other monitors. With not enough power they tend to become muddy.
I've heard people say that the SAEs are a bit critical for audio below 150 Hz but I've never had problems. We're using the 805s side by side with a pair of Quested H 108 and for bass and low mid critical decisions I always switch to the B&Ws. By the way, it's very rare that I switch to the Questeds at all.

Thanks for all the advice on speakers and amps. I just got a Bryston 3bst for the 805's, and am very pleased with it.

I bought both the speakers and amp from audiogon.com, and recommend it as a good place to buy used hifi stuff. It seems that audiophile type are always "upgrading" their system and selling off their old stuff which they take very good care of.

thanks again

I have a pair of the B&W Nautilus 805's. Incredible speakers. Extremely detailed, balanced, accurate, and non-fatiguing. They sell for around $2000 new, the Signature series is a slight improvement on the same model for several hundred more.

I bought mine on audiogon for $1200 and had a great experience. I happened to find a seller in my own area so I tested them out at his place before paying and avoided any shipping costs as well. I recommend audiogon. Great site.

I use the Kyocera amp that I already owned. I thought I might need to replace it when I upgraded to these speakers but I like how it sounds. I don't find the N805s harsh at all, but they definitely have a lot of high end definition.

I don't know what your budget is, but unless you have unlimited resources I would recommend getting the N805s and using the other money elsewhere.

I like these speakers. Don't get me wrong. I just find they lack a little in midrange and the low mids are not as detailed as i would like. This could also be due to my room. I've been using a hafler 9505 amp with them. They are great monitors for listening to for long periods of time- non-fatiguing. Over all I was happy with them.... been using them for years. Definately one of the better monitors for around a thousand $ range. Don't think I don't have second thoughts about getting rid of them. But it's to late cause they are on the way to you (michaeltheangryrussian). I will be getting a decent bonus at the end of the year so I figured I would upgrade. It still felt weird shipping them off today. Enjoy.

I used the ones in EA's Studio B on three occasions which is what made decide to get them... the mixes translated so well, everytime, and they are a pleasure to listen to. My 20/20 bas monitors, on the other hand, dont translate as well. I've used these speakers in 4 different rooms over the past 4 years and have had the same translation problems each time. I have learned to mix on them over the years, but I prefer a more accurate monitor. I think the 805s will fulfill this need. thanks,
mike
