How loud do you like your music?

I'm the idiot sitting next to you on the train with Cherubs gushing from my headphones; I'm the idiot roommate chastised early in the morning for listening to Big Black when I think my headphones are plugged into the stereo; I'm the idiot music fan dancing with the speakers at a Flaming Lips gig, (so ecstatic); I'm the idiot drummer with no sense of subtlety and/or dynamics so I just hit shit as hard as I can. I'm that idiot.

Do you have a doppelganger I could borrow that lives somewhere along the Hudson?

It's the only way I'll be able to achieve the sound I hear in my head.

If I'm using headphones, 4. I worry about hearing loss sometimes. If I got the space, music always sounds better loud, but if I'm sticking the speakers in my ears, I want to watch out.

I recently bought one of the newer iPods, the one with the aluminium front. Using my sennheiser earbuds, the music is still perfectly audible when I turn the volume to the lowest possible setting. It's impossible for it to have 'zero' volume unless you unplug your headphones. The lowest possible volume is still loud enough to hear comfortably in your home. If I turn it up more than a quarter of the way, I hear distortion. And yet I see kids all over the place using these iPods and you can hear what they're listening to from across the street. The next generation is going to have some serious hearing problems.

So, through speakers, 8. Through earphones, 4, at the most. Anything louder through your earphones is kinda dumb.
