22Without a doubt Obama can be charged with typical electioneering practices. Strong leftist rhetoric for the primaries and a slide to the center for the election. This game is as old as the U.S. What he will actually do is difficult to predict.
I do think that claiming any lingering presence of U.S. military is the same thing as retaining robust forces abroad is nothing short of equivocation. An either/or perspective is a bit stone-age considering the complexity of the shit mess we have erected over there. It is that same either/or-two-dimensional rhetoric that got Bush in over his head and kept the public cheering into the blood bath.
The current relationship between the U.S. military and Iraq is a puzzle box. Atrocities are enacted because of it, and they are prevented because of it. Infrastructure has been rebuilt to a certain degree, but tensions are still high. I think ultimately a complete withdrawal would be unethical, likewise 'business as usual' would also be unethical.
