Yes, that is completely true. People can act however they like on the internet. They can pretend to be something they are not. They can present a persona to you which is an absolute fabrication. People seem to enjoy the escapism of creating characters which allow them to do things that they would not dream of doing in real life. There have been extensive studies on this subject for well over a decade.
A few years back, a member of the Kansas-based band Boy's Life created an internet character on this forum which he perpetuated for over a year. Practically everyone on the forums believed that he really was an incredulous man-child, when in reality he was a jobbing musician like most of us here. He was just having a laugh, stringing some folks along for the sake of creative amusement. Eventually the joke was revealed and basically everyone admitted it had been an exhaustively executed and ultimately harmless prank. The lesson was that nobody should take the internet that seriously. If only because you never know when someone is taking the piss.
If you want to say "Bob is rude, obnoxious, aggressive, paranoid, abusive, delusional" on the forums, I will agree with you. If you say "Bob is rude, obnoxious, aggressive, paranoid, abusive and delusional in real life because he is on the internet", I'm going to tell you to stow the assumption. I don't think he is. I don't think he could act like he does in real life. I think he'd have a lot of difficulty. My guess is you could have a drink with the guy in any bar and you'd never know it was him.
I'm not defending his behaviour online because I shouldn't have to. It's none of my business. All I'm saying is that just because you know the forum account, don't assume you know the man.
