Yes, that is completely true. People can act however they like on the internet. They can pretend to be something they are not. They can present a persona to you which is an absolute fabrication. People seem to enjoy the escapism of creating characters which allow them to do things that they would not dream of doing in real life. There have been extensive studies on this subject for well over a decade.

A few years back, a member of the Kansas-based band Boy's Life created an internet character on this forum which he perpetuated for over a year. Practically everyone on the forums believed that he really was an incredulous man-child, when in reality he was a jobbing musician like most of us here. He was just having a laugh, stringing some folks along for the sake of creative amusement. Eventually the joke was revealed and basically everyone admitted it had been an exhaustively executed and ultimately harmless prank. The lesson was that nobody should take the internet that seriously. If only because you never know when someone is taking the piss.

If you want to say "Bob is rude, obnoxious, aggressive, paranoid, abusive, delusional" on the forums, I will agree with you. If you say "Bob is rude, obnoxious, aggressive, paranoid, abusive and delusional in real life because he is on the internet", I'm going to tell you to stow the assumption. I don't think he is. I don't think he could act like he does in real life. I think he'd have a lot of difficulty. My guess is you could have a drink with the guy in any bar and you'd never know it was him.

I'm not defending his behaviour online because I shouldn't have to. It's none of my business. All I'm saying is that just because you know the forum account, don't assume you know the man.

He's like the PRF's eccentric uncle. Sure, he spouts off from time to time but he stands by the strength of his convictions and has spurred some interesting debate.
Just saying s'all.

The strength of his convictions is mental illness, and rarely does he spark what I would call interesting debate, as he will never ever admit he was wrong and since that never happens is it really a debate? Aren't you call kind of feeding his paranoia problem?

Also If he can derail a thread can't I? I mean I haven't called anyone a name or been a complete ass hat about it... so no we can't lay off of him here... Its really not ok to defend his character or tactics, its ok to defend his right to say what he wants, its ok to agree with him, but any sane person can see he has a real mental problem.

I don't know if he has a mental problem as I'm not a licenced psychiatrist.

With all due respect, you claim in your sig to be ignoring him yet here you are trying to assemble a lynch mob. If I found derailing topics to be as distasteful as you do I would take the high road by NOT derailing a topic as opposed to doing so and saying, "Well, he does it!"

I have asked the mods not to ban him, but make it so I can not read his posts, this is not possible, I have been told this by the mods, and can post the PM if you need to see it. I did not start the CB topic, but I am more than happy to derail a thread about Sweetpaddythefuck being banned as does anyone really care much about that guy? I know I don't... I am simple tired of having to go around him, and many many other people are also...

and if he is not mentally ill he is a complete and utter asshole, the type of person who would not have your back if you needed a fiver (I can prove that one also) also please show me a place where he has admited he is wrong here, about anything, I am not saying he hasn't I am saying I want to see it, so I can judge him mentally ill or total an utter douchbagette, either way he won't be eating fine german sausages at my house...

My point isn't that Bob is a good/reasonable/sane person, just that we don't know what he's like purely from his posts on an internet forum. Simple as that.

Personally, I don't want to make excuses for his conduct because like I said, it's absolutely none of my business. He can do what he likes and experience shows that he does.

If it is Walter you are talking about he wasn't an asshole, he didn't really derail threads and make everyone here hate him, his love of Smashing Pumpkins was a little disturbing but hey, to each his own I guess, that being said it does speak depths about someones personallity if they feel the need to take on some sort of act for people... as I have said, I know many people here, everyone I have met here has been an awesome person, and if you need to put on an act infront of awesome people I have every right to think you are less of a man/woman for it...

I saw Boys Life at least 10 times, they were a pretty damd good live band, if they needed a place to stay I would have let them crash on my couch, but I am really good at sizing people up pretty damn quick, I can tell who I can trust and who I can't really quickly, and have a keen sense to when things are a miss in real life, I am pretty sure I would have kept an extra eye on that waltermalling kid...

Yeah, ok. The family of the girl who killed herself after her fake boyfriend dumped her should not take it seriously, because hey, it's just the internet.

The guys who had their personal info posted online because they were naive enough to believe the Craigslist ad they were responding to was real shouldn't take it too seriously, because hey, it's just the internet.

The family who were repeatedly sent grisly pictures of their daughter's post-car-crash corpse shouldn't take it seriously, because hey, it's just the internet.

Extreme examples, yes, but when online actions result in meatspace repercussions (I would go see Meatspace Repercussions), I don't see how you can so easily compartmentalize the two. They go beyond mere prankdom, and I have no problem fingering the offenders as sociopathic at best.

I don't purport to know the motives or mental status of Bob/Rick/Tom/Rusty Shackleford/whatever the fuck people are calling him this week; but even though I often hear he's a stand-up guy off this board, he spends so much time cultivating his belligerent persona, it does make some wonder how much is an act and how much is true. To me, it seems a lot of work invested in what you apparently view as a mere pisstake.

I don't need to see it b/c YOU can choose to not read his posts. I've been doing it for quite some time. Scroll down, etc. I prefer to laugh my ass off when I'm here.

As anyone who knows me here can attest, I am not trying to wind you up.

yaledelay wrote:Aren't you kind of feeding his paranoia problem?

You are 100% certain that he is mentally ill so you bait him in your sig? And I'm feeding his 'paranoia problem'?

C'mon, dude. Seriously.

Again, as anyone here who knows me can attest, anytime you're in NYC I have your back for a fiver or some eats. No joke.

I would have offered you sausage but some fucker would have clipped that as a sig. ;-)
