I use the Sony MDR-EX51LP earbuds.

They have great freq. response, good isolation, are comfortable, and at $40 are a helluva lot better deal than the Shure or Etymotic products, which though great products, are a little too pricey for me to abuse commuting.

I find that the Sonys extended top can sometimes be a bit harsh, but the low freq. extension is really impressive. Their also very efficient, so you'll get more time out of an Ipod at top volume.

I've heard the Shure's and they're pretty nice, but I'd feel pretty bad if they got damaged chasing around town every day.

While I'm not actually an iPod owner, I use Sennheiser PX 200s for listening to music on the laptop while working in public places. The advantages: collapsable and come with a hard case, so they don't get messed up in your bag. They have great isolation. I like them a lot better than Sonys, which I find to be shrill. Disadvantages: They aren't quite as good as my completely-over-the-ear Sennheisers (forget the model number...HD525, maybe?), and they don't have the low end extension of them or of real speakers, but duh--they're small, portable headphones. I also find them to be a bit peakier in the high end than the HD525s, which is a minus for me, but might be ideal for you, I dunno. On the plus side, they're under $70 at various places online, but look around and see what deal you can get. (I think mine were something like $55.)

What is a reducing adapter and why would it allow one to use any headphones?

I think he means you can get a 1/4" to mini stereo adaptor for more standard studio type headphones to work with such things as Ipods and Walkmen and the like as they usually have mini INs.

I have a pair of E2s that I use with my MP3 player (non Apple); they are fantastic.

They sound great and they basically give the same experience as sticking one's fingers in one's ears in terms of external sound-blocking.

It's worth taking them out whilst crossing the road though...
