e1 not so hot. an ok first try, i guess.

e2 pretty good, and a good deal.

e3 better and sexier than e2. appropriately priced.

e5 very, very good in-ears.

the e4 is in development, and is supposed to kill

i can say these things b/c i no longer work there

Signore Midgetti's relative comparison of these is accurate.

However, to add a personal qualification, the difference between these and standard earphones (such as shipped with the iPod) is like the difference in magnitude between riding a 3-speed bike and driving an Audi.

I personally have not used anything other than the E5s for years.

This is too close to an advertisement. More info is very easily found upon the InterWebs.
It's like you put everything into a bottle inside itself.

Please talk more about the ER-6s and ER-4s and whatnot. These headphones have risen to the top of my short list. The stock headphones are awful.

While I am at it, what EQ setting do folks use?

I assume that this iPod will soon be in the back of the closet next to the Walkman, the StarTAC cell phone and ye olde butter churn. Salut, Apple marketing department.

This (what I am about to write) is not helpful.

However, El Presidente uses ER-6s:

Golly, L A U R A has some kind of dreamy brown eyes!

The worthiness of the ER-6 should not be tainted by this unholy contact.

I apologize.

Edit: specifying that I am not helpful. Not at all. Not ever. Not even to Old Man Jenkins.

The ER-4s are what I would buy if I had excessive amounts of money just lying around, and listened to music through earphones close to 24/7. Several friends of mine have pairs of them and will go on at great length about how superior they are to every other earphone they've ever used. I trust these people, but they all have more money than I do so I will not know their joy.

The ER-6s however were within my spending range, and so I bought a pair - they do an excellent job with noise-cancellation and sound terrific in every setting I've used them in from an airplane high above the middle of America to the gym - the ONLY problem I have with them, and really only in the gym, is that when the cord gets knocked around you can hear the thump, I suppose because of the nature of the ear seal? I don't know things.

Anyway, I'm not sure how much talking I can do in support of the ER-?s that etymotic.com has not already done much better, but they have my vote of approval.

i have the er-6is and i like them. i also have hd600s, so when i'm not on the go i'll use those. they're pretty sweet. the er-6is slay the stock earbuds/excrement dollops, but they do have a bit of a high end bump that sounds a little unnatural to my ears. it's at about 7 kHz, i believe. they do a good job of reproducing low end and the isolation is great. you don't have to rock your ears when listening in noisy environments.

Ah, how proud! To use the same earphones as El Presidente! And how proud, to live in the city whose paper also outed the Vice-President as an IPod user!

So proud. I will just go step off this very tall building now.

Salut, Bumble.
