So this thread will be a place to post stories about people you may have come across who turned out to really surprise you in their musical enjoyment choices.
Example, I worked for an airline and I was doing overnights. We would basically bring the last few planes in and unload them then clean them. That took an hour, the other 7 were spent sitting around bullshitting and cooking in the breakroom.
One of the ladies I worked with was this 25 or so year old black woman who had what sounded like around 25 wild ass out of control children with 25 different criminal dudes from the way she talked. She'd been in and out of jail, had a gang of fucked up gangbanger tattoos all over her neck and face and shit, tons of gangster stories involving insane amounts of drugs and violence. Looked, talked and acted the part of unstable gangbanger ghetto mom to a tee. I liked her a lot, we got along very well. She was also an ambulence driver as her second job, lots of good stories.
One day we are smoking weed, as we would do quite often during downtimes and she pulls out a DVD and puts it is. 'You gotta check this shit out, this motherfucker is amazing'
Pat Metheny comes out and noodles around on some kind of giant fucked up harp/guitar thing through a bunch of delay pedals for an hour.
She was absolutely transfixed the entire time.
'This shit right here is real shit, this motherfucker is playing from the heart'
I shit you not, she was wiping away tears by the end of it.
She REALLY loved Pat Metheny.
Everything else she would play was regular R&B booty music or gangster rap, but once and awhile when she was in the mood she'd bring a new Pat Metheny DVD in 'Yo, this one's from London. They appreciate his shit over there, not like here' She'd hit play and he comes out and noodles around on some other weird half guitar half whatever instrument for an hour.
Blew my mind. I didn;t have the heart to say anything bad at all about it, I just pretended to think it was awesome as well.
People who have thrown you with their musical choices
