So, I'm a mid-western boy trying to live in new york for this summer surely and perhaps beyond.
Anyone have any tips or leads on getting a sublease or some other ingenious idea I haven't thought of yet as to how to live in that fucking city for 3 months?
I know this is an odd place to post this, but I'm running out of time and ideas.

If you have no friends or family in NY and you're not oozing $$$ from every pore, finding a place will be a problem. It's also a cunt renting a place in the rotten apple. You could stay at (one of the) Ys, is less hassle in logistical terms but they do stick it to you.

I'd recommend you become a barfly. Seriously; pack light and hit the bars. You're bound to run into someone.

Shiiiit, I might be moving to NYC next year...and spending 2/3 of my income on housing.

Living in NYC all depends on how you want to live. Do you need to live by all the way cool Upper East Side meat markets...eer, I mean bars? Do you need to be in walking distance of everything because you are scared of public transportation? Well, start saving your money.
I highly recommend looking outside of Manhattan (and Brooklyn, which is just as bad as Manhattan money-wise). I lived in Woodside, Queens for 2 1/2 years, and loved it. Half a block away from the subway, 1 block away from a grocery store (make sure you take those into consideration where ever you live). I wouldn't say cheap...but I was able to live by myself in a non-shoebox apartment in a very safe neighborhood and still go out, eat, all that good stuff. 30 minute subway ride to my job in Chelsea.
You might want to even look in Jersey. Easy to get to Manhattan. Hoboken is not cheap, but Jersey City may still be reasonable.
Bumble is right...Craigslist is the way to go. You might also want to look in the Village Voice.
And there might be another option, but I don not know what the cost are...NYU offers summer housing to people not taking classes. I know it was cheap if you were taking classes...

A friend of mine lives there. It's less expensive than other areas but it's ugly and nasty. The 7 train is like a third world nightmare... Hyper-aggressive Chinese and South American people with no concept of courtesy crushing into that horrible train.

I rode that fucking train WAY too many times.
