HD24 or other 24 track digital recorders

If any of you have one, tell me what kind of board you are using. I'm thinking about this as my next step up, but i'm not getting any good info on what board is affordable but good to use it's 24 tracks.

I will be using it as a stand alone, and not in any conjunction with a computer. I'm just not ready/don't like the protools/computer way of doing things, but cant deal w/ tape hassles of an analog 24 track recorder.

I have used one, don't own one. But done a load of sessions using one.
The studio I was working in had a Behringer desk which wasn't great at all. I believe they're pretty afordable if you like that stuff. I find it just feels and sounds a bit cheap.
the HD24 is quite cool though sound quality is as expected from a Digital recorder. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing too awful!
The transport is ok, just like an adat really. I always find digital linear fast forwarding and rewinding is a stiff feeling. But it is on all systems really.
The one thing to watch although you said you won't want to transfer stuff to computer. If you ever should have to, as far as my experience tells me the ethernet port on the HD24 is at 10mbps which sucks cos it takes AGES to transfer stuff. They may have updated this but I don't know.

i did a session on one with a mackie 8 buss mixer/HD24. i didnt like the mackie too much.

you might check out a soundtracs topaz for cheap but still good. 24 ch inline.

agreed with david, i think it took me 4 hrs to transfer 4 songs (3-4 min songs) via regular ethernet connections from my desktop to the HD24. they do make a fireport thing that makes data transfer a lot faster if you do it often.
