i'm really tempted to put c9/c10 back into my cek12 mic.....as i said, its sounding a bit thin compared to the other one i have.
rodabod....what is this "m7 type capsule" you have?

I doubt placing these back in will help much if the mic seems thin. The first place I'd check would be the capsule, or the suitability of the transformer. C9/C10 are just there to reduce RF interference as part of a low-pass. Give it a try though as it's a simple job.

It's an M7 reproduction in Mylar which I bought from Canada. It may not be a PVC, but it's incomparably better than the Chinese capsule that was there before. I believe this is where the biggest difference comes from.

13Was that the Dale guy from Calgary on Prodigy Pro?
I was considering ordering one myself...

have you done anything to c8?
i've been told that replacing the electrolytic with a poly film cap with a value higher than the one i put in (.68uf) can help extend the bass response.

I assume you mean the plate to transformer coupling cap? I'd maybe put a 1uF film there. That said, some other mics can't get away from using an electrolytic here.
Yes, the capsule was from Dale. He's stopped doing them at the moment, but fortunately I managed to get one of the C37style capsules as well.

i have a Peluso CEK12, and a Lundahl LL1636 transformer in there. I've been meaning to replace C8 in both my mics...maybe its time to give that a shot. I figured the c9/c10 thing might help, as its the only circuit difference between the two i have. one sounds really "full", the other sounds very, very "open" and "airy". when i get home, i'll try them out...maybe the lack of some low end is in my head.
Rodabod, were you going to replace the zener diodes in the PS? did you decide on a value?

There's a guy named Dave Thomas in the Vancouver area who has a bit of a reputation for doing some inexpensive and very effective mods on the Apex 460. I'll try and get his email address from my friend and post it here.

Yes, I'm going to drop the HT voltage so that I get 60V / 0-120V on the capsule. That follows 1/2 a C24 still, so getting 120V from the power supply should be the trick. I still need to measure mine, but I think it should just be a case of swapping the zeners for a pair which add to ~120V or a 120V zener if you can find one.

20It appears that Mr. Thomas is only working on mics now. That's interesting...
He used to be the guy with knowledge and experience to call for repairing Ward Beck gear. He doctored my WBS466 compressors. Fixed 'em right up. I have some EQ's I'd like him to look at too, but it appears he's shying away from that business. Too bad...
