I really like that song.

I can remember Brent telling me he had always thought "To Love Somebody" was a Gram Parsons song. I think a friend finally broke it to him after that record came out.

That said, the Gram Emmylou version of "Love Hurts" bests earlier versions of that song.

Same thing with the Alex Chilton version of "I Will Always Love You" or, maybe not.

Are we counting rewrites of other people's songs as covers?

Cause if so, I'm counting "Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters (it's better than Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man," sorry - Diddley didn't have a chorus of women shrieking in delight every time he said he was a man, as Muddy did), and Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" as a better version of the Yardbirds' version of "I'm a Man."
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Spiritualized® - Any Way That You Want Me (original by The Troggs)

debatable:

Galaxie 500 - Listen, The Snow is Falling (original by Yoko Ono). The original is really unique and great by itself, with its use of musique concrete at the beginning and end, and the fact that Ono's voice doesn't suck on this one at all. However, it does not have the awesomeness that was Galaxie 500.

Pixies - Hang On To Your Ego (original by the Beach Boys). The original demo of this song by Brian Wilson (that later was rewritten by Mike Love as "I Know There's An Answer" and put on Pet Sounds) is pretty awesome. But the Pixies invert the melody and make it into dark surfer rock.

i might be wrong but i think this was on the first solo album of Black Francis, not a Pixies song...

for me a good song Pixies covered will be either :
Cecilia ann or In Heaven

I would add a chorus (or maybe it's an echo) to comments about Killdozer's covers. I tend to think that they didnt cover songs as much as take possession of them.

Honourable mentions:
Mudhoney ... hate the police (dicks)
Neil Diamond ... if you go away (jacques brel)
Aereogramme ... disciple (slayer)

Willie Nelson's version of his own song Crazy (written for Patsy Cline) almost seems like a cover and is top banana.
