I once swapped an original Marshall Guv'nor for a Boss Super Chorus. I was 15, and an idiot.

I once sold a 70's japanese black strat copy that had a maple neck with black block inlays and in-built distortion and phaser circuitry that actually worked well. For £60. I was 19, and a poor student.

Never regretted selling anything since that though, mainly because I haven't sold anything.

I never made any truly horrid decisions, there are guitars that I'd like to have kept but sold for considerable profit though.

Bought a '53 Gibson ES-225 for $200, sold for $400 a year later. Traded a very early Kramer bass for a '76 Gibson Explorer reissue and a few bucks at DJ's Rock 'n Roll in Cicero.

I suppose some of you would consider the sale of my Veleno to be a mistake, but I truly do not miss it and play the hell out of the Guild I purchased with 1/6 of the money I received.

I keep things that I like, I have the same Sound City cabinet that I bought 30 years ago. Sold the head just last year. It never sounded good and I didn't care to mod it.

I still have the Univox Hi-Flyer bass my dad bought me at Biasco in 1974. I always thought it was very cool and then the rest of the world started agreeing with me.

I had a 68 P Bass that I sold. I should have kept it, but I am happy with my Rickenbacker bass.

I had a 72 Les Paul Double Cutaway in TV yellow. It was pretty much mint. I got it when I was working at this vintage guitar shop. I got a really good deal on it. However, I was to afraid to take it out of the case ore even really play it that much because it was mint. I ended up selling it to get my Orange. That was well worth it, but it would have been cool to still have that guitar.

I had a chance to buy a Univox Hi Flyer and Guild S-100 from the same guy, I waited to long, and didn't get them. I regret that a lot...

during a couple month period of unemployment, i sold an older model v4b for 450 to a friend for his studio. i ended up buying a later model v4 a couple of years later, but i still wish i had that older one. this was right before people started going nuts over them, so i kind of bailed on my investment.

the first real vintage guitar i bought, a 67 gibson sg junior, i sold to my brother for 400 bucks. it wasn't in the best shape when i bought it (i think i paid 700 for it), and it definitely lost 99% of its collectable appeal when i got through with it. its probably not worth much more than what i sold it to him, the finish was shot to hell, it had schaller tuners put on it, and i broke the neck off twice, but it sounded incredible and i really miss it. luckily, i can borrow it from time to time since its still in the family, literally.

on the "didn't buy because i was dumb" tip, i was in a guitar center outside of syracuse ny on tour, and saw a 72 sg special with mini humbuckers that appeared to be in immaculate condition for 600 bucks. this was in 2006. i have no idea how that guitar got priced so low. i'll probably never see a a deal like that again.

i'm sure pretty much everyone has had the chance to buy mint ampeg (non-svt) and peavy tube stuff over the years and has totally passed on the opportunity. when i was in high school, i would see used v4's with matching cabs frequently in pawn shops and guitar stores around where i grew up.

Actually, you totally could find a deal like that again. I just sold my '74 SG Special with mini-humbuckers, like a month ago here on the EA Forum, for $700. As great of guitars as they are, they don't fetch nearly as high of a price as the non-70's non-Special versions of the SG. There seems to be some misconception out there that they're somehow not as good as the Standard or Deluxe versions. Personally, if I could have any of the three, I'd have the Special with the mini-humbuckers.

Keep an eye on eBay, and you'll see them from time to time, and you might even catch a deal as good as the one you passed on. They're not terribly common, but they do come up. And for whatever reason, they sell for cheaper than the others.

Here's a couple of my biggest mistakes:

I traded a 1972 Orange OR80 and an original ( Hand Engraved Serial#) Chandler Tube Driver even for a mid 80's Fender Twin II head.

Sold a 58' LP Jr. whose headstock had been replaced with that from an LP Custom for about $200 to partially fund an ill decided, ill planned move to Burlington, VT.

-- I still feel bad about these decisions nearly 20 years after the fact.
