Earth Wind and Fire and Sun Ra...500 times as badass as these tired fucks.
This is an objective truth and in no way opinion.

I will give this band not crap, with some waffles. I can't be objectively sure wether or not I like them mainly due to hearing their music a lot at a very you age at my childminders house, and they do occasionally do some shit reggae or something else like that, but certainly there's plenty of stuff from the first 5-10 years that I get a lot of enjoyment from listening to. I think Anthem of the Sun is probably my favourite, the documentary about making that and American Beauty was pretty fascinating.

The John Oswald "Grayfolded" CD is also quite excellent, I think.
Don't shun it. Fun it.

As a casual listener of the Dead (FM radio, friends with drugs, the occasionaly hot hippy chick, etcetera) I can honestly say I have never heard anything I have liked by this band. That said, I've liked everything I've heard by Garcia with David Grissom. Beats me.

throughout my life, I have had many close friends that were deadheads.

whenever I paid close attention to the music, it just seemed like 5-10 musicians not really listening to each other playing noodly little solos on top of each other- some similar patterns, some not, always "melodic" and safe. bad drumming.

I get the impression that at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the fans of this band in the late 1980's to 1990's were into the lifestyle, not so much the music. so much of the music is fucking awful.

it's funny that their radio hit album is one of their best. my parents had a shrinkwrapped copy of American Beauty that my dad never opened after it was given to him as a gift in 1970 (or thereabouts) because he thought it was "heavy metal"

I'm going to say CRAP.
