The Political Compass

One of these things is not like the others. I have taken this before, and don't remember how I scored. I would be more concerned by a move upward, than rightward, which I think is the case. I believe my lack of strong answers in most cases floated me toward the center. Problem is I can always think of exceptions to everything, which caused me to not be able to agree to things I believe are mostly true, and vice versa.

My political views are mostly unbridled libertarian, but that does not mean anything in the face of that charity vs. social security question. Is what is right (in my view) going to trump what is obvious (giving people money helps them). What does that do for my pseudo accuracy?

Also, some of my answers are temporary. I never answered that rich people don't pay enough in taxes before, because they pay the lion's share, even if their rates are lower. I don't care about regressive taxation much, and believe that it is egalitarian to share the cost of government. I struggle with some of the kinks that reality presents, but if I am going to be honest about my view then I have to answer accordingly. Right now, with a massive debt, and that debt having been amassed to the benefit of the rich, while their taxes have gone down, I answered differently. Everyone's taxes need to go up, to pay this down before it become's the next generations burden. Blah.

"If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations."

So binary. These tests are increasingly ridiculous...they assume two ways of thinking, and are easy to rig.

Waste of time. Not to mention that questions like:

"Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races."

have probably never once been answered by most of the current political names this site attempts to plot.

I am bemused as to why you are so offended by what is nothing other than a simple indicator. Of course it is binary. If you can devise a test that takes only ten minutes to complete that provides a significantly more nuanced measure of one's beliefs over such a broad range of issues, then I take my hat of to you.

Moreover, it is just a bit of fun. Why so offended? You're right that it is simplistic and binary, but it does mark out clear differences. The one friend to whom I sent this today had a significantly different result to most of those here. If it was as rigged as you claim, then this would not happen.

There are those who would strongly agree with these propositions. Probably no-one here, but this test is meant to encompass extreme views as well as more moderate ones.

Johnny 13's remark about his answers being temporary rings true. There were a fair number of questions which I paused over. A year later, my answers might be different.

Adam's distinction regarding the difference between belief and action is probably the heaviest criticism I can see against such tests. On this particular day, my answers, given in good faith, have put me in the bottom left. However, if you were to track my actions over any given period of time, my little dot would wander towards the centre. To actually live in the real world requires making many more nuanced decisions all the time. Adorno's impossibility of living a "good life" comes to mind here.

Now now dftr, no need to go into past history... Minds change and all that. I still voted for Blair after the Iraq War started.

How is sunny Athens today? Nice, I hope!

Edit: you know, for quite some time I misread your forum name as don't feather ringo, which is a sad reflection on my perverted mind.
