replying to simmo, the North starts at Sheffield or Liverpool/Manchester, depending which side of the pennines you are on (the east or the wrong). I've got a theory that the reason people are so violent in Nottingham is because of insecurities about not quite being "North". Once you get into Yorkshire, people don't have anything to prove anymore.
