Learning to play drums

1
Good evening EA Forum.

I play bass (sometimes guitar) in a band.
Our drummer sucks and we are probably going
to kick her out of the band.

Anyway
When she is not at practice, I wind up going behind the drums
and messing around. And I cannot get enough of it.
I can keep a beat, and really want to get better

I think where I may run into my first bit of trouble is the whole
playing hi-hat, snare, and bass drum
the sort of chewing gum and rubbing your belly at the same time

I can keep a beat doing 2 of the 3 but not all three yet.
I'm sure it takes practice
and now that I have regular access to a drum set which
I've never had before, I will practice a lot
because drums are probably one of my favorite things
to listen to when listening to a record.

So. Any suggestions aside from practice practice practice?

Any suggestions at all would be welcome,
and especially suggestions on going from 2 out of 3
to 3 out of 3

Thank you
Christian

EDIT: another thought. The drums are at not at my house.
Is there any merit to buying one of those awfully cheap drum sets just to practice on? like a 100 to 200 hundred dollar one?

Kicking a chick out of a band is always a mistake.

That being said, the best drumming advice I can give you is to tighten the shit out of your snare drum and aim for the floor. Everything else is bullshit.

Thank you Dr. Venkman. Can you tell me why? For the second part.

Don't worry. The other two members of the band are chicks too.

Metronome, making guitar and bass loops have always helped me.

I think it really just is practice practice. If you have rhythm, then you just need to practice and practice. Good timing is always great to have, of course. Every drummer I know of personally, just did it, practiced all the time.

Thanks TRIFECTA.
Lucky? If you mean because I'm a boy and they are girls...no
they are actually married...to each other.

@Dr. Venkman

I will assume aiming for the floor is sort of like aiming for a foot behind someone's head when you are going to punch them?

If they are married to each other, it's fucking better!!! Tequila nights!! All lesbians need some schtick once in awhile. Cock never hurt a lesbian. Make sure you don't perform to good, you may just get one to turn straight. Pull a fleetwood mac.

This is the best advice ever for drumming

being a drummer who learned in an orchestra, i'd say learn drum rudiments first...they're easy to understand and read...

also practice your rolls...most self-taught drummers can't do a decent drum roll if at all...

and don't be afraid to experiment...

also, never ever try to fix a drum stick once it breaks...it's never the same again...just accept it...

Well, in order to give you a proper answer, I'm going to need to see some pictures of your band. Ya know, to get the feel for what you guys are trying to do. I will then come back in 10-20 minutes and answer your question.

No seriously, If you're just starting out, I would say that a big mistake many people make is trying to play everything at once without first learning the basics of simple technique. Practice just the snare and kick. If you can't play a simple beat on the snare/kick, you sure as heck ain't going to be able to add all that other stuff.

Play an exercise/beat as fast as you can but AS SLOW AS YOU HAVE TO. This is important. Everyone wants to play it on the first shot. SLOW DOWN, get it right, then you can speed it up.

Rockin' Bass Drum (as cheesy as that sounds) and Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed are excellent books of exercises which will improve your playing immensely.

Hope this helps.

@Red Square: Thanks. I agree on getting the simple stuff down first.

@Dr. Venkman: Again thanks for the advice. One of these days I'll put a picture of us in the appropriate thread. I changed computers, lost all my bookmarks and can't remember where my internet photobook is
