5Saw them a bunch of times... each show very very different...a couple after Jamie left the band so no drummer... very long, drawn out haggard shows... they were numbing.... so good.
I have not yet seen the latter day shows of the past two years... i hope to see them next week.
Not Crap!

6Souled American operate at a pace that is beyond glacial. So I can claim that I saw some "recent" shows of theirs about a year and a half ago.
They have a "new" drummer, who wasn't all that great, but it didn't matter. They were fantastic.

7I love them but I bet I'm one of only a handful of Australians who have even heard of them.
My heart leapt when I saw a thread about them. I've never seen any mention of them on any of the music bbs I'm a member of.
I was always an adventurous purchaser of music and remember years ago buying Fe on a hunch and have never looked back.
I only have Fe, Flubber and the molasses like Frozen. Are Around the Horn and Sonny worthwhile?

I have every Souled American record. I could talk about them quite a bit.
They are all masterpieces. If you like one or two of them, you need to get the rest.
"Sonny" is their covers record. I think Chris Grigoroff does his best singing on this record. Listen to him sing "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain." His singing conveys tremendous pain and humor.
They do a version of the traditional folk song child death ballad "Little Bessie" on this record and it is one of those things that never really leaves you. It is authentically scary.
Their last record was called "Notes Campfire," which was the name of the first song on their first record. I once wrote that this record "emanates from some dismal point in space." It is even slower than "Frozen." It barely moves. The saddest song I have ever heard ("Born/Free") is on this record.
I know Andee of tUMULt records, who did those CD reissues. About 3 years ago the band told him their new record was just about done, and he was set to release it. It still isn't done.
Souled American is a mysterious band.
They are playing at Tonic in NY on August 1st, w/the incredible guitarist Jack Rose. I guarantee that this show will be one of the best you will see this yr.
