My parents took us all out to see this on Xmas Eve. It's a good time, but I wouldn't stand by it as a good movie.

I really like the way Stallone shoots Philly. I wish more movies that filmed in Chicago would at least attempt to really capture the neighborhood nuances in the same way instead showing the same damn tourist shots of the Hancock Building, Lake Shore Drive, Wrigley Field, and Wacker and Michigan.

The movie is good for some memorable lines.

Marie: Sir, do you have a reservation?
Paulie: What am I, a freaking indian?! HaHaHaHa!

Rocky: I got so much stuff in my pocket, I'm like a kangaroo here.

But man, it opens way too many doors that it can't close. There are so many themes and characters here that have so much potential, but there's just no room for them in this space. It's not quite a movie about struggling for purpose after your life's work is behind you. It's not quite a movie about moving on with your life after the death of a spouse. It's not quite a movie about old-school athlete values in a modern age. It's not quite about his faltering relationship with his son. It just bites off so much.

Also, why don't Rocky fights have any defense at all? Dixon lands 59 out of 69 punches in the first round? C'mon.

Lately, I've been a total sucker for the inspirational sports dramas, so I give this a NOT CRAP. Sure, this movie is not perfect, but I was entertained and the whole 'beast inside' thing was kinda glossed over, but I enjoyed the pep talk he gives his son about "it's not how hard you hit back, it's how hard you can get hit and keep moving".

Again, NC.

I just watched it.
Pretty good flick.

I could have done without his kid, didn't care about the story and the kid is annoying. Boo hoo hoo, I hate the fact my dad was a universally respected and admired boxing champion and all around decent guy because it is hindering my getting ahead in the corporate world.
Pfft.

I really liked the relationship he has with the woman, I assumed it would be cheesy they fall in love bullshit but it wasn't. That was nice, they just got along and liked helping each other out.

The champion dude he was fighting wasn't a very good actor and that kinda took away from it a little.

The fight was not too bad, liked the flashbacks and whatnot.

NOT CRAP.

Because the guy is a boxer, not an actor. The guy he trains in Rocky V was also a boxer and not an actor.

I caught this movie late in a hotel room a while back. Not bad. The first two Rocky movies with Apollo Creed are still the best though.
