A good friend of mine visited me last weekend and played me some Calexico, who he was enthusiastic about. I highly rate my friend's taste, but we differ a lot over this stuff. As I told him, I thought they sounded "nice". Which is to say, pleasantly mediocre. Well-executed nice, but nothing I found exciting.

not crap, i really like almost everything they've done.

Not crap at all - great band and great guys. New album is some of their best work too!

I feel like they're a really subtle band. Maybe I haven't listened them to death yet or something but I pick up on something new every time I listen to one of their songs.

Live, they're very entertaining as well.

In Calexico-related news, Howe Gelb was sitting right next to me when I ate lunch at Hotel Congress the other day. That was pretty cool. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Mr. Gelb.
