Don't think of this other guy as the enemy. It is a fairly weak move on the management side to bring you in over the top of someone else if you both have the same skill set. It's a vote of no confidence in the other guy. It could be that this other guy has fucked up one too many times or is unreliable or an idiot - whatever, it sounds lke they want him gone and are using you to hopefully make him go of his own accord.Piss-poor people management to my mind. Sounds like the head engineer needs to strap on a pair and do some getting rid, rather than creating an awkward working environment for everyone.
