GreetingsI'm wiring up a patch bay so that a multi track (24ch) can be interchanged on EDAC/ELCO connectors in a similar way to what you've done at EA. Seems there are a few different ways for wiring a 90 pin for 24 channels and I was wondering which one EA use or if there's any kind of standard across studios? Does the gender follow signal flow ie. Outputs (Male) to Inputs (Female)?or....Should all panel mounted EDAC's be male and any floating cable ends be female (as the hidden pins on a female make it more robust)?Thanks,Mark

Hi Mark,I'm not electrical, but regardless:I've seen a lot of different pinouts, at least three reasonably sensible ways of laying channels out. I have no idea what would be considered standard so I'd tend to find out if there's anything else with EDACs on in the studio and use the same pinout as that. Otherwise just pick one you like.I also normally put all female connectors on panels and male on cables, on the basis that it's easier to make a new cable than it is to do wiring behind a panel with cable that might have limited give, be hardwired at the other end or that might go off somewhere inaccessible etc. so if any damage is going to occur I'd rather it was to a part that can be easily removed and reworked or replaced.If there's a more standard way of working I'd also be interested to learn it.

Good point about about the females being on the panel! I'm leaning towards that way now (with the 90 pin wired to the 'SAC' Standard Audio Config.), although it would be good to hear from others about how they've done it.Cheers,Mark

When we went to ELCOs, it was because our console at the time (Neotek Elan) used them.Though we've changed consoles, we still use 120-pin ELCOs for multi-channel interconnects to the console. (We have both 24-track analog and 24 in/out of digital.) We've kept the pinout used on the Neotek, which I don't know the name of. (Ch 1 starts with A/K/V. Ch 9 starts at AD/AP/AY. Ch 24 starts at CD/CP/CY.)Females on the panels, males on the snakes.We use crimp pins, and also solder the connections for extra stability. Things have been trouble-free since we started doing that.
