It is VERY not crap, but I can't vote on that one song alone, so I'll abstain for now.

Either For Your Special Sweetheart (the album from which "Savory" comes) or the self-titled one are good starting points. Their earlier Dischord albums are more straightforward post-punk than what they would do later, but are also good (though I find Novelty to be weak comparatively).

Before they were in Guitar Center and the like, I meant. I don't remember seeing Schecters in Musician's Friend back then, for instance.

I've been giving their first and last albums some attention lately, and contrary to my expectations they sound like not-quite-agressive, not-quite-melodic early 90's alt rock, with differing degrees of finish. It's a bit like Seaweed, a band I really dislike, but with less energy. I know some people who idolize Jawbox, so I was expecting to find something more interesting to chew into. I also have ...Sweetheart around the house, though it doesn't bother me like the other records, it has never really clicked with me, but I consider he jury to be out for the moment. Still, bordering on a Crap vote. From roughly the same era I've been enjoying my also recently acquired Shudder to Think and Monorchid CDs far, far more.

Funny, I'd take the s/t over Sweetheart any day. Bill's songs on the latter, in particular, I find pretty weak. Great guitarist & bassist, kinda boring songwriter.I'm not sure what folks around here dislike about the s/t, actually. I get that the mastering is in less-than-good taste, but the songs and performances are just ridiculous. Shit, what can you say about Barocas' drumming?

That was probably a mistake, agreed, but I don't hear any alternative bands having done anything like what Jawbox was doing at the time. When I got into them in 97 (admittedly late), it was precisely because they sounded nothing like anything else that was being shoved down my throat by that scene. I don't hear anything cliche on that record. Perhaps my points of reference are limited.
