" 16-track tape / dump to digital
Oh man, are these from a Mitsubishi X-800 recorder? That's the only 1" 32 track I know of. If so, that's going to be a tough one to find.Edit: nevermind, it appears these guys can do it: http://www.gear4days.com/transfers.htm I know nothing about them though so YMMV.

Ok - I've gone through all of the accompanying hand-written notes and I'm pretty sure these are 32-track. A friend looked at them briefly and guessed 16. You don't also have a 32-track 1 machine, do you? March of '95 and the tape looks great (although the boxes smell strongly of basement.) Sorry if this was a waste of your time (but thanks!)

...and it's Ampex 467 Digital Mastering Audio Tape. Looks like this was its first use.

Anybody got a machine that could read one-inch 16-track? I see a 1 8-track on the Electrical equipment page - could it at least tell what's on these things? I'd really love to hear them again.

I really need to learn how to subscribe to the posts I make. I just saw this - and just sent Gear4Days an email. For 200 bucks, plus shipping, I can hear partially-completed masters of tunes I forgot how to play 15 years ago! Digitally!! Yay!!!Thanks again - Jim

p.s. Had to look up YMMV. That's the most cryptic acronym I've seen all day.

Mr. Toad's advertises it can play back and transfer nearly any format, so you could get a quote from them. benadrian (poster here) works there, so you could contact him and keep it "in the PRF".

" 32-track could be 3M, Mitsubishi or Otari DASH, but the fact that it's Ampex tape means it's probably not 3M, since they used a proprietary tape, but I don't really know, maybe that's what Ampex based its tape on. Doesn't matter, any of these will be real hard to chase down. The notes accompanying the tape should have some hint as to format or machine. If you photocopy the box label and post it here I'll bet we can figure it out for you.
