I don't quite get what you're talking about. They're on time, aren't they? (Well, okay, not on Dragnet. But that album still rules...even if it's obvious the band doesn't have enough chops between them to make up an appetizer.)

they speed up. often.

I like that. It provides excitement. It's infinitely better than them slowing down, for god's sake.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

it's called hitting your stride. just right for bands that sound like they're off the rails in the best sense.

Herr Tim wrote:Eric Spicer (Naked Raygun)- Sorry Eric, I do like some aspects of your drumming, but do you have to rush almost every fill in every song?

Bobby Strange (Naked Raygun)- I don't think I have to explain this one.

Steve Plouf (The Wipers)- A step down from even Brad Naish. Pretty much the same damn beat in every single song. No creativity. I love the Wipers, but the later albums with Steve are often a chore to listen to.

Almost every drummer rushes out of fills from time to time in a live setting when they get excited. Mac, Stanier, Traynor...Eric was prolly more excitable or more intoxicated or something. Or not as good as those guys, truth be told, but nevertheless - that beat on Dog at Large was pretty boss. And you gotta love the reverse fill that launches the band into the main part of "Vanilla Blue."

I also don't care for the implication that Brad Naish wasn't an excellent drummer for the Wipers. Greg sage refers to him as "hypnotic" in the re-release notes, and I agree. Those really long songs on Youth of America? He's just perfect. Also, one of my favorite stolen drum ideas was his - entering a song or leading into a part by simply flamming the snare on the four then resting until the one. GOLD. I also love how he plows through "Now is the Time." His time-keeping is good. The only thing that isn't great is the recorded sound of his kit.

He stood up and did that floor top thing.OrthodoxEaster wrote:There are so many!... My Bloody Valentine guy whose name is too Celtic to spell properly. Dozens more. You're nuts. Colm is a great drummer. The stuff on Loveless is weird because he was really sick and they had to construct drums out samples, composites and other creative moves. I've seen him live and listened to his other stuff and he's a fantastic player.FYI, even though O'Ciosig is pronounced O-coo-sic I prefer my friend Joe's pronunciation of O'Sausage.-A

Benny wrote:i saw sonic youth in november (one of their last shows, actually) and i would say that steve shelley is the core and main member that wraps the band together. what he does is awesome, super simple and tight and locked-in. everybody was surprised by how good he was, and how terrible the rest of the band were playing.Steve Shelley is a phenomenal drummer. He keeps time but is still arty enough to have his own distinctive style. You always know it's him, and not because it's bad.No, Evol, Sister and Daydream are the holy trinity of SY records. I remember when I heard Evol I thought a band that was pretty good and interesting had gotten light years better. Examining the album I saw they had a new drummer. He is their glue. A solid rhythm section allows chaos and madness to have free reign. It worked in Gang of Four, it works in Polvo and it works in SY.I can't understand for the life of me why anyone would think this guy isn't a great drummer. Not your thing? Sure, we all have our opinions. I don't like Matt Cameron's bands but he's obviously great.-A

Her drumming just never seems to flow properly, and her fills sound like someone learning the drums, always slightly behind, and not intentionally so. If you've seen her live, watch how hard she has to concentrate to execute even basic shit. You are either crazy or not a drummer. Not crazy. My drumming is decent, not great. However, my friend who plays drums with me and is a phenomenal drummer agrees with my assessment of Janet. She ruined SK for him. I liked SK all right, but Quasi was unbearable.
