Replace the drivers in both if possible with a matched pair. I don't know where you'd get these drivers, but I imagine Dynaudio and Focal make one that would work. I thought Snells are being produced in the UK under another name? Definitely fixable, though.

Not sure if this is the proper thread, but I'm out of my league here. I have an old set of Snell Acoustic Type C/II speakers from I believe the 80s or early 90s. I got them as a hand me down, but rumor was they were $1500 speakers when new. If you look at the first picture, there is a bunch of missing stuff (foam?) around the top of the largest woofer. See here:https://www.dropbox.com/s/hdi8l5pbula9mzj/IMAG0206.jpgHere's the full speaker in its camera phone gloryhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/ilw40d6hopo4fba/IMAG0205.jpgWhat are my options? Is there a place that will repair at a price where it's worth it? Can I simply buy two woofers of the same size and replace them in both speakers? Say "forget it" and get a set of $200 Polks that may sound just as good? Ideally I'd like to take it somewhere to have it repaired and have them replace both speaker grills (cat scratches) but I don't even know is people repair speakers anymore at a price that makes it worth it.Thanks in advance for any advice.

Looks like they are still around, they even have a parts order form:http://www.snellacoustics.com/Snell\_Par ... t\_6-10.pdfThe woofers are $162 a pop, looking closer at the other one it's coming apart to but not at the same level. So probably talking $350 or so after shipping to replace the woofers, I can't see myself dumping that much money in these. They have a 10 inch woofer, is it like car audio where I can just buy two 10 inch woofers and the mounting is standard or is it more customized? If I can go 3rd party cut that price in half ($175) I'd consider replacing them. Edit - Combined two rambling posts into one.

snell Cs were considerably more than $1500 per pair when new. They were Snell's second from the top of the line, second fiddle to the amazing Snell A's. They need a substantial amount of power to sound good, but they can really sing. If you can buy replacement woofers that were made for that specific box and that specific crossover, you should not consider anything else. seriously, a fully refurbished pair of snell Cs is a near reference quality speaker. the rest of your system would need to be significantly upgraded to fully exploit their capabilities. you should have no further need for loudspeakers if you got these things up and running.

Decided to try something other than Ortofon for a change and went with a Nagaoka MP-110.Did you ever find out what the problem was? I have a debut/ortofon and the lack of clearance between the cartridge and record makes me nervous. Was there contact between the cart and record, cerebral?

No surround. So I just can't see myself putting that much money into them & the rest of my HiFi, plus who knows if anything else needs repair.

Edit - Combined two rambling posts into one.Snell is long out of business.D&M Holdings acquired them, and then closed them down when the economy went to crap. I know a lot of D&M people, so I could ask about where those replacement drivers wound up. Most often, a re-seller buys their entire stock for pennies on the dollar and acts as a go-to agent after these companies go away.As for the second part of your question, call the people at Madisound if you want to have an intelligent discussion on lesser priced options outside of the OE spec items. If you cannot find the originals (or pay what is asked if you DO find them) then a place like Madisound are experts in finding a close enough facsimile that you do not wind up with a sensitivity and/or impedance curve mismatch that will shift the frequency response after the passive crossovers and completely fuck up the character of the design of the speaker.High end speakers like Snells have pretty finely tuned passive networks with impedance matching circuits and pad resistors so that the FR and voicing is dialed with the exact drivers that are chosen.

You can't really just slap in two drivers of the correct size without some research. The Thiele-Small parameters of the driver define how the designer engineers the cabinet, and this is especially imprtant if the cabinet is vented with a portYou could either have the driver's surrounds repaired, or maybe speak to the original manufacturer is they still exist. Is it Snell as in Snell & Wilcox who made broadcast kit? Someone who worked there may be able to at least provide specs for the drivers which you can find something at least similar to in response parameters.

A quick search confirms that they are likely made by VIFA or Peerless, which are Danish driver manufacturers.Madisound is one of the importers of these drivers, and they would have the T/S parameters, impedance data, and sensitivity info of the discontinued products, and the data to make an intelligent recommendation for replacements.http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/retrofits
