I used to share DirecTV with my tenants but they cancelled it because they never watch it. i am OK with just broadcast, but I kind of miss having the discovery, history, nat geo, etc. channels and some sports. DirecTV was fine, I never had a real problem with except for it going out during storms. Our equipment was close to 10 years old (pre DVR) and never had a problem.

A dude showed up on our door the other night with what seemed like a decent offer. Was cheaper than Comcast and had more free movie channels. More concerned with the internet end of things. According to dude, Comcast lists higher speeds but everyone in the area has to share the bandwidth. He claimed AT&Ts is a direct line or some shit. Opinions? That's my understanding as well. This is how Apple TV friend (who works at Apple as a coder) explained it. So weekends are a data traffic jam.We have AT&T DSL and the only problem we have is if we try to use two outlets at the same time. For example, if my son is gaming through his XBox and we try to stream a film, he usually gets the shitty loading. I can't say I have any serious complaints about AT&T, once I get through , if I have a problem, their CS has been fine. Also we only pay around $35/mo.Last Friday we were at a friend's at night and the kids were streaming Batman through Apple TV over Comcast and the stream had to buffer literally every two minutes. For the exorbitant Comcast prices (and they don't give you a modem here, you buy it) that is some serious bullshit.

So our bill for basic internet (no TV or anything) is somehow at $100+ a month now. Comcast is the only goddamn option in my apartment complex, and I'm pretty sure they know that, but I'm going to try my best to get this reduced. Does anyone know of options for internet that don't require where you live to be set up with a cable or phone line connection? Maybe there's some kind of high speed wireless hot spot type thing?

If you have unlimited data on Verizon or something else with a great network, would work ok. Once 5G is more common, it'll be a viable way to go, though I don't know how expensive it would be.SilverIP and the like do wire up apt bldgs. SilverIP is very well-regarded. I don't know how much sway you and the other tenants might have, in terms of going that route instead.I've looked into this at length. You're hosed, basically, in Chicago, if you don't live in a multi-unit bldg with dedicated fiber service.

Thanks folks, I'll looking into SilverIP and WebPass tonight. From the building owners' perspective, I think having more than one internet option would be a selling point they could promote to prospective tenants (especially fiber/high speed)--I know it'd be a plus if I was looking for a new place. Also I'm sure the other people in my building would be all for it, so I'll talk to some neighbors. greg wrote:In most buildings they have land-line phone infrastructure. Can you get AT&T though that?Nah, unfortunately. We had an AT&T person come out after seeing on their website that our building was serviceable, only to discover that the building's landline cabling had been torn out at some point.

Our condo building, which also contracts with Comcast, added WebPass a few years ago. WebPass is a Google Fiber affiliate of some kind. Getting our building wired for it was super easy. It didn t require any real infrastructure work, and it didn t supplant Comcast, for those people who didn t want to switch. We did want to switch, however, because cable sucks and Comcast sucks even worse. The price is something like $500 a year (a bit more if you pay by the month), and the speed is way faster than Comcast. I can t recall any major service issues, either. I think they also offer some kind of TV service, but I m not sure. We just use a $20 digital antenna for the Olympics and the World Cup.Mrcanceled, you should see if WebPass operates in your neighborhood. Adding the service to our building was totally painless.
