If said gameplan is Tele pickups in a less "Twangy" guitar, my solution would go a little something like this -Find humbucker guitar that is less "Twangy". Add a pair of these -http://www.guitarfetish.com/Humbucker-Rout-adapter-ring-Fits-Tele-Neck-Pickup-THREE-COLORS\_p\_4351.htmlhttp://www.guitarfetish.com/Humbucker-Rout-adapter-ring-Fits-Tele-Bridge-Pickup-THREE-COLORS\_p\_4350.htmlThen, work my way through actual Tele sets until I hit what I was looking for.

Early 80's Squier branded Fenders can be a great bang for the buck. A lot of people know that they're good and price them accordingly if they know what they have but they still fall through the cracks price wise on ebay or at pawn shops. The serial number will begin with either JV or E. These are Made in Japan and if you find one priced the same as a crappy Korean Squier, you'll be getting a great deal on a good guitar. The humbucker on the '72 Re-issues isn't the same as a real 70's humbucker at all but I think those are still nice guitars. My old roommate had one and I always liked it.if I could find a good deal on a 72 reissue custom I probably wouldn't use the neck pickup much anyways. They're the same size as WRHB though right?

I think so, but you could always upgrade the pickups later (get a new pick guard if you want a normal sized humbucker). They play nicely, so electronics can be changed to taste. If you want a more vintage style look into the Classic 50s or 60s tele. I hear great things about them and I played a 50s one that was lovely. I think they go used around 400 USD. Cool colors too. I'd love one of the 60s, but I haven't seen one in person to test the neck (I don't like skinny necks).Squier made a decent two P-90 black Custom a while back. I never tried one, but people seemed to really like them. I think these are fro the Vintage Modern line. I really liked the Classic Vibe thinline I played too. Maybe consider G&L tribute models.Edit: here are some links,https://reverb.com/item/615843-squier-telecaster-custom-black?\_aid=pla&pla=1&gclid=CM7rvKXqnsUCFcKHaQodv7cA-whttp://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU0301260http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU0301265http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU0303035http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/fender-modern-player-telecaster-thinline-deluxe-electric-guitar/h76270000002001?cntry=us&source=3WWRWXGP&gclid=CO67iaLqnsUCFYVFaQodCLMAJQ&kwid=productads-plaid^18283950120-sku^H76270000002001@ADL4MF-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^46504699467
