Came up with a couple/few recently. The first is because Mrs. Enframed asked for a cocktail that contains Fernet Branca, and also for one called "Velveteen Rabbit." I killed two birds...Velveteen Rabbit2 dashes Peychaud's bittersegg white ½ oz Fernet Branca ¾ oz lime1 oz Velvet Falernum1 ½ oz white rum Dry shake, wet shake, strain, rocks, grated nutmeg garnish. Tried white Rhum JM for this and the minerality kind of dominated. El Dorado 3 yr is better for this cocktail, and for mixing in general, and is very affordable at $15 or so. Also tried it with Appleton white rum and it sucked.I've been thinking about banana and Mezcal for a couple of years but just got around to playing. These are named for the Arrested Development gag in which GOB is on the search for "Hermano." What with the Mezcal and Sherry, and the banana simple and liquor...you get the idea. For both, dry amontillado works best, IMO, but a fino will do. Hermano1 ½ oz dry Sherry ¾ oz Giffard Banane du Bresil1 oz MezcalStir, strain, up in chilled coupeMarta y GOB1/2 oz banana simple syrup*1 oz dry Sherry1/2 oz VSOP level Cognac1 1/2 oz MezcalStir, strain, big rock in old-fashioned glass (Could also be served up in a chilled coupe, depending if you find dilution desirable.)[Edited the above: added Cognac for a little more complexity.]*Banana simple: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 2 baby bananas or half a medium banana, sliced. Bring just to a simmer, remove, let come to room temp, refrigerate for at least six hours, strain through cheesecloth, bottle, refrigerate.
