I'm still buying gear but not through need - just out of desire. I'm happy with my rig, it's simple and reliable and (in my opinion) sounds fantastic. The other stuff is just periferals and can come and go. I'm going to build a bass to match the Jazzmaster I built this year purely because I enjoyed the process and fancy having a Jazz Bass to match. Jazzmaster, OR120, 810/412 - guitar doneT-40, TS-50B, 810/115 - bass doneIf I'm ever solvent enough to collect and keep more expensive items I'll buy a hiwatt, another svt, Princeton, etc etc just to have around for fun but I can happily live without.

I was talking to FM Teacher's Pet about an ad I'd seen for another Univox 1x15 solid state combo, exactly like the one I have except for being in near-perfect cosmetic shape. He told me about how he looks at gear purchases as adding tools to a toolbox, like mic pre's, maybe you have some nicer ones, some less-nice ones, but getting a new one, even one you already have, means that you've got more channels to work with, etc. He was really amused that my main motivation to get this Univox combo was just like what I've got, but prettier! with a side helping of stereo amps for stereo tremolo!Sometimes I'll look at the pictures guys post of their 14 Telecasters and think that's crazy but another part of me knows that the guy would happily point out the ways they're all different, and that I could easily imagine myself in the same situation.

I wish I could ever be satisfied with my amps....When I had a '65 Bassman, an AD-30, a Musicmaster Bass Amp, a Guild Thunderbird, and an AC-15, I was unsatisfied. Now, I can't imagine having any two of those (especially if those two were the Bassman and either the MMB or the AC-15) and not being over the moon - it's all perspective, I suppose. It's not dumb, though - think of yourself as a painter with his palette. You need oils and pigments, you need different colors of paint to make your art. Well, you paint with sound. And if the sound in your head is something you can't readily bring out with what you've got - then your mind starts to wander.Or, you could sound fine, and just want to collect guitars. Which is cool, too. Catch 'em all!

I'm going to use this thread as a sort of gear-holic sponsorship check in. This past three months(?), I haven't bought any gear. I've just played guitar and written riffs/songs. It feels great, but I know that on any given day I might look at craigslist. I've been good to control my triggers, but there's temptation all around me. I'm trying to stick to the mantra of "if you want something you have to build it." so at least I'm learning and being productive while feeding the beast.

something similar was posted on the first side.I was totally satisfied when I was 17-19, having a cheap Yamaha bass and luckily an Ampeg B115.From the point I started buying pedals and (later) better gear I was unsatisfied for about 25 years. When I was finally and ultimately satisfied, about 6 months later I quit making music.Maybe coincidence but I really enjoyed trying out out new stuff, trying to make it sound right, find a good position for the new cabinet, as well as playing. 2 years later I found out that the company I work for provided a rehearsal room in the basement.None of us cared at all about its cheap equipment.

I've been having a struggle. For my loud rock bands I've been using my heavily modified Traynor for about seven years now. I've made mods to make it sound quite good with my EGC, though sometimes it is lacking in headroom. I recently tried using it with other guitars and it just doesn't work for me. It's so dialed into one sound with the one guitar. So, I cracked it back open, retraced the schematic (because I'd lost all my hand-drawn diagrams and notes), and began to plan the next round of mods. Then it hit me... Maybe I just should get another amp? Or *gasp*, maybe I should just start using my Helix with a big, loud power amp? It's super cool to build my own shit, and it makes me feel like I've accomplished something. I also like sticking to the same gear and really forming a bond and identity (hello Shellac, Fugazi, etc). However, the itch has began and now I want one thing that is more flexible and will work in a few situations and with a few different guitars without breaking out the soldering iron.
