These are the best I've found:Goat (from Japan)https://goatjp.bandcamp.com/album/new-gameshttps://goatjp.bandcamp.com/album/rhythm-sound-both of these releases are phenomenal. Drums, bass and prepared sax, but the bass and sax are mostly muted and played like percussion instruments. Super duper complicated rhythmic stuff that I never get tired of hearing. Practically all I've been listening to the past few months.Niagarahttps://preschmedia.bandcamp.com/album/ ... -1970-2016-two side-long songs of what sounds like a never-ending '70s car chase. Some sort of supergroup project band, I believe. Perfect album cover as a bonus. Incredible.Blake Fleminghttps://blakefleming.bandcamp.com/album/times-up-drummer of the Dazzling Killmen doing multi-tracked solo experiments. Some nice field recording odds and ends scattered throughout as well.Tiguehttps://tigue.bandcamp.com/-trio from New York, who I hope hurry up and record another album that includes this unreleased piece of badass. Not strictly percussion, as there's some minimalist keyboard stuff happening too, but the focus is definitely on rhythm.Drew Gowranhttps://drewgowran.bandcamp.com/album/vi-tal-i-ty-local St. Louis guy with this solo recording. No overdubs that I can tell. Really solid, interesting drummer who just continues to get better and better. Thanks for this post. This is perfect for my evening.Ditto.Just getting to the Goat last, but that is very close to the Liebezeit/Friedman vibe.

Mark Ernestus' percussion-driven projects:phpBB [media]phpBB [media]Tabla duos:phpBB [media]Eli Keszler's last record: https://emptyeditions.bandcamp.com/album/ee001-last-signs-of-speedEDIT: The Keszler record and the sparser, rhythm-driven Lumisokea tracks may be closest to your original Liebezeit/Friedman reference. Will try to think of more modern polyrhythmic stuff like that.I also like this unreleased Ben Vida set which maps Haitian rhythms to modular synth:https://soundcloud.com/ben-vida/tracers

Burmese hsaing waing groups are kind of the opposite, but may be of interest nonetheless: the tuned drums (pat waing) are the lead instrument/player and carry the melody (which still may reach the itch you are looking to scratch), fascinating shit (I got a chance to collaborate with some of these dudes in a friend's project):phpBB [media]

Also, it may seem obvious, but seek out gamelan music if you haven't already (tons on youtube). It is insane and insanely beautiful music, and I would definitely call it more percussive and rhythmic than what we think of as melodic (or harmonic of course) in its structure. You can pick up nice gamelan tapes and vinyl cheap if you look around.phpBB [media]
