Also needs to be able to play FLACs, WAVs, etc. I've been using VLC but lately it's been doing this thing where it kind of garbles audio, like it's skipping samples or something. Can't figure out what's wrong with it so I need something new!It is a bit of a resource hog (RAM), but iTunes can be set to not organize songs and albums. FLACs can be converted to ALAC without discernible (any?) loss in quality. The application is native to the OS.

Yeah that's true and that's how I've used it for years, but it's still trying to maintain a library as in it shows all the songs you've ever playedOf course it maintains a library. That is half of the reason it exists. Almost every music player will maintain a library. You wrote that you don't want it moving things or organizing. iTunes can be set to do that and only link to the files. I am not sure what the problem with a list of recently played songs is. It can be cleared periodically.iTunes is a resource hog, in that it uses more memory than a simple player should. It does other things, which account for this. RAM usage is of little consequence given the power of most modern systems.ALAC is a 1:1 copy as far as I can hear and have read about. I have been switching my entire digital library to FLAC recently (then converting to ALAC). I can't hear any difference. Technical studies have shown no loss in quality at the data level. The only downside is a slightly (by few MB) increased file size. ALAC is accepted across pretty much all platforms and players, and will be for the foreseeable future.

You are best off reverting all your preferences or reinstalling VLC and going back to what you know. VLC is the best audio/video player for any platform. Software doesn't just change itself. The issue must be related to a setting, update, etc. You may have hit a hot key that is affecting the playback.

I use/have used VLC player just about every day for 10+ years on Windows, OSX, and Linux platforms in various capacities. It is the best. No contest. I have never had it just stop working. I have played with settings and couldn't figure my way out. I have hit the wrong hot key and screwed something up. I have had to reinstall because of a setting issue. It has always been my fault when it gets to that point. A reinstall and more careful attention has fixed any problem I have ever had.

I have no desire to start converting files simply because it takes time and FLAC is pretty great as is. I just need a simple player that can deal with whatever file formats.

Yeah that's true and that's how I've used it for years, but it's still trying to maintain a library as in it shows all the songs you've ever played, but that's no good because the metadata more often than not is messed up. So basically I browse my music library, choose what I want to play, and load it to VLC. blackmarket wrote:FLACs can be converted to ALAC without discernible (any?) loss in quality. Also like you said, iTunes is a resource hog.projectMalamute wrote:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqualung\_(software)Looking into this one. Not too thrilled about having to install libraries and compile the thing myself, but it's better than the alternatives so far!

Also has the nice feature of playing back songs without a gap in between. Really makes listening to albums that segue track to track nicer. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find a player that does that.
