Thanks- the fader ride preset seems to do the trick as well as anything else, and much more simple. so, how do I go about doing edits to a stereo mix, like fades and such? Havn't found a tutorial for this. Dan uses soundforge for all this sort of stuff and 'fake mastering'. is that a better bet?
nope, that is pretty much it. I can clip the individual tracks...but have yet to figure out how to get rid of the excess time at the beginning and end when I am fumbling to walk from the computer to the amp, etc-. I also figured out the fades on an individual track, so I can ease in a guitar or whatever- but doing a stereo fade of the whole song? Of course it'd be nice to be able to set levels across a group of songs as well.

Once you have a master mix, you can do what Adam P mentioned above. Just import the master mix into a new project, and make all of the final changes(like a stereo fade out) to what will wind up being your finished mixes. As for all of your songs coming out at the same volume, that gets a little bit more complex but still totally workable. Here is a video that revolves around just using Reaper -phpBB This one is also solid(but a good bit more complicated and might not work for everyone) -phpBB If those don't get the sonic results you want, there are some other PC options. I guess we can get into that down the line if you feel like you aren't getting close to what's in your head.

That area will be highlighted. You can finesse the highlighted area with the handles that appear in the timeline at the top if for example you actually want to start a half second later. You can also zoom in to make sure you're seeing a more precise point in time. When you export (ctrl+alt+r), at the top of that window you'll see drop down options to define your export: the first is Source (you probably want the master mix) and the second is Bounds. Set Bounds time selection and it will export the area you highlighted. Alternately, you could set the Bounds to Custom time range and enter the start and stop points manually if you like numbers or are blind. One other way to highlight a time selection: put a marker at the beginning and end points in the song. Click in between the 2 markers (by which I mean specifically in between the 2 marker flags with numbers that are in a separate strip above the timeline, not anywhere else) and the area between them will be highlighted and can be exported. I also figured out the fades on an individual track, so I can ease in a guitar or whatever- but doing a stereo fade of the whole song?Generally this is done on each individual track, since different instruments will have different decays. If you wanted to you could automate the master fader, but that's probably only going to lead to frustration when Eric farts or stops holding a note or whatever while you're still chiming out at the end of a song. Or when he is tuning underneath your intro. Or when he is doing any of the things he does while not playing.
